Breath-taking nature, thrilling cities and interesting cultures make Latin America worth a trip. Although salaries are not quite as good as in Asia or the Middle East, Latin America's low cost of living should definitely attract your attention when it comes to the financial aspect.

TEFL teachers in Latin America will mostly teach adults in private schools and can also do some extra private tutoring.

  • One of the largest EFL job markets in South America
  • Benefits: work week of 20-25 hours (incl. prep. time), plenty of time to travel and explore the country, comfortable lifestyle affordable
  • Requirements: TEFL certificate; bachelor's degree preferred, but not mandatory

Brazil

  • Concentrated in Brazil's larger cities, e.g. Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Recife, Salvador, and Brasilia
  • Benefits: work week of 20-25 hours (incl. prep. time), comfortable living and travelling affordable
  • Requirements: TEFL certificate; bachelor's degree preferred, but not mandatory

Colombia

  • One of the most dynamic nations in South America
  • esp. in Bogota, Medellin and other larger cities
  • Benefits: welcoming people, casual laid back lifestyle, lot of flexibility, work week of 20-30 hours (incl. prep. time)
  • Requirements: TEFL certificate, mother tongue/"near native" English speaker; bachelor's degree preferred, but not always required

Costa Rica

  • Teaching opportunities all over the country, but concentrated on San Jose
  • Benefits: beautiful tropical sceneries, world class beaches, the "Ticos'" warm hospitality, work week of 20-25 hours (incl. prep. time), comfortable living and travelling affordable
  • Requirements: TEFL certificate; bachelor's degree preferred, but not mandatory

Chile

  • Most developed and advanced economy in South America: one of the best job markets for EFL teachers, with jobs mostly found in Santiago, Valparaiso, Serena, Concepcion and Vina Del Mar
  • Benefits: Most diverse terrain on the globe (Dry Atacama Desert meets high and beautiful Andes), work week of 20-25 hours (incl. prep. time), enough time to travel, comfortable living affordable
  • Requirements: citizenship from USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ or SA preferred
